💡 In June I completed the ILM72 certification 🏆 which enables me to study leadership styles and thus compare individuals and their respective leadership and management styles 💫 .
💡 Is it actually ILM72?
The ILM72 is a validated high-quality psychometric tool that is also a normative test, meaning that the results of the survey are presented against a population of managers and leaders 📊 .
💡 ILM72 general scales - indicate core leadership competencies:
✅ Focus on results - a measure describing the determination to implement plans that drives a leader and his or her followers. Satisfaction is highly dependent on this leadership competency.
✅ Focus on individuals - indicates strengthening the abilities, confidence and commitment of individuals to enable them to succeed and feel fulfilled and satisfied in their performance.
✅ Focus on teamwork - emphasises and reinforces cross-departmental teamwork. Determines the level of knowledge and support a leader provides on how to work together in an organisation.
💡 If we go deeper we can see if the particular manager or person we want to promote in the organisation is:
📌 Task-oriented vs. People-oriented - this is a motivation scale that indicates which beliefs a manager holds in motivating people.
📌 Flexible vs. Essential - this is the scale of engagement - it shows how the manager involves people in action.
📌 Decentralised vs Centralised - this is a measure of control that shows what the manager believes the extent of his/her direct influence should be.
📌 Managing by praise vs. Managing by demands - this describes the preferred way of seeing work.
📌 Process-oriented vs. Outcome-oriented - is a measure of goal orientation that shows the level of determination to achieve results and set goals.
📌 Based on acquired knowledge vs. based on innate resources - a scale that shows to what extent the structure of the operation is important to the manager.
💡 When is it a good idea to perform the ILM72 test?
✅ Recruitment - helps to streamline the process of matching a candidate to the culture of the organisation and the tasks of the job.
✅ Succession - allows matching the right person in the employee development process.
✅ Development planning - matching training and development activities to what the leadership style of the organisation is or is expected to be.
✅ Development projects - especially management development processes that optimise management and leadership styles, their effectiveness and alignment with the needs of the organisation and its members.
