18 March we celebrate European Brain Day - a celebration to raise awareness of the brain and promote activities to support its health and fitness. It is a good opportunity to take a closer look at this remarkable organ.

What is worth knowing about the brain?

  • It weighs approximately 1.3-1.4 kg and consists of 90% water.
  • It contains approximately 86 billion neurons, which form hundreds of billions of connections.
  • It consumes as much as 20% of the body's energy, although it accounts for only 2% of body weight.
  • It begins its development as early as day 3 of prenatal life.
  • It can produce around 25 watts of energy - enough to light a light bulb.
  • It has no pain receptors - it does not feel pain itself.
  • It can store up to 2.5 million gigabytes of information.

  • Physical activity - improves blood circulation and supports cognitive function.
  • Dream - At night, the brain regenerates and cleanses itself of toxins.
  • Hydration - Even slight dehydration impairs concentration and memory.
  • Healthy diet - is crucial for the functioning of the nervous system.
  • Avoiding stimulants - protects the brain from damage and a decline in performance.

The brain is extremely adaptable - its plasticity means that we can learn throughout our lives. It is worth supporting it every day with lifestyle and new stimuli.
